#1 Reliever: Brian Burgess, New Market

March 26, 2010 - John Leonard

Brian BurgessAnd here we are. Finally, we've reached the end of the lists of top hitters, starting pitchers, and relievers. Now it really does feel like the season is right around the corner! Brian Burgess 2010 West Alabama Anyway, our top reliever had an amazing season for the New Market Rebels. So amazing, in fact, that he went his first 21 innings without allowing a run, and another 3 1/3 before allowing an earned run. He gave up just that one earned run all season long.

So, our #1 reliever, Brian Burgess, a junior at West Alabama, was the key arm in the back end of the Rebel bullpen. Overall, he went 3-0, 0.32, with 10 saves, a 0.919 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, 10.8 K/9, and .175 opponent's batting average in 19 games and 28 1/3 innings. It's incredible enough that it needs to be stated once more: Brian went the entire regular season without allowing a single earned run. He finally gave up his only earned run against the Luray Wranglers in the playoffs, but it didn't cost the Rebels that game- they came back to win. Here are his game-by-game stats:

Date Opponent   IP   H   R  ER  BB   K W-L-S
7-Jun Luray 3.0 3 0 0 0 4
12-Jun Rock 1.0 0 0 0 0 2

23-Jun Covington 1.0 0 0 0 0 1  Sv
26-Jun Rock 2.0 1 0 0 0 3
28-Jun Woodstock 1.0 0 0 0 1 1  Sv
3-Jul Fauquier 1.1 0 0 0 0 3  Sv
6-Jul Harrison 1.0 1 0 0 0 1  Sv
8-Jul Haymarket 3.0 3 0 0 0 2  W
16-Jul Luray 0.2 0 0 0 0 1
18-Jul Harrison 1.0 1 0 0 1 1  Sv
23-Jul Winchester 1.1 0 0 0 0 1  Sv
26-Jul Harrison 1.1 2 0 0 0 1  Sv
30-Jul Woodstock 1.0 1 1 0 0 2
31-Jul Harrison 2.1 1 0 0 1 3  W
3-Aug Luray 3.0 3 2 1 3 3  W
5-Aug Luray 1.0 1 0 0 1 0  Sv

There's a whole lotta zeros on that list!

Not surprisingly, Burgess is also the closer for West Alabama this season. Through March 23, he's 0-1, 5.25, with 6 saves, 1.25 WHIP, 1.5 BB/9, and 11.3 K/9 in 11 games and 12 innings.

As a freshman in '08, Brian went 2-1, 2.92, with 5 saves, a 1.30 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9, and 6.1 K/9 in 40 innings. As a sophomore, he went 1-1, 3.31, with 11 saves, a 1.10 WHIP, 2.0 BB/9, and 9.7 K/9 in 35 1/3 innings.

Congratulations on the excellent summer, Brian!
